60 Second Interview with...

Joanna Streames

Founder and Adviser, Velvet Mortgage & Insure Services

1. What issues are you hoping to explore at the Conference?

The UK is in a cost of living crisis which bring crisis points for brokers, I think if we can explore ways to manage this as brokers and ultimately explore way to serve our clients better by adapting at this time we will have stronger businesses ourselves whilst also having better placed clients. We are here to serve clients whilst making a living and I believe we can still do this through better processes and systems.

2. What's the biggest challenge the industry will face in the next year?

It is the cost of living crisis undoubtedly and brokers need to heed Consumer Duty. It can't be ignored. I think advisers get very busy and tend to bury their heads whilst also holding on to tasks. Systems and processes can help make sure brokers are staying safe.

3. How is the industry navigating interest rate hikes?

We have to be realistic and have frank conversations with clients. At this point, clients know their rates will increase. Early advice is key and again comes back to processes and systems. Communication is more important than ever.

4. What piece of advice would you give young adults hoping to get on the property ladder?

Don't be put off by the doom and gloom you sometimes hear. There are still plenty of opportunities and it is still cheaper to buy than rent. Speak to an adviser early and get yourself mortgage ready.
